The first month has flown by at Pudsey Camera Club, and we’ve had an exciting start to the season!
We kicked off with a captivating talk by Martin Litchfield CPAGB on “The Art of Monochrome Photography.” While Martin doesn’t have a formal website, you can check out his work on Flickr [here]. His passion for photography, particularly infrared images, really shone through during his talk. It was refreshing to hear an experienced judge discuss images that personally excite him, rather than just those that typically win competitions.
Next, we introduced a new event in our program, “What We Did on Our Holidays.” While the title suggested a theme, it was really more of an invitation for members to share what they had been up to since last season—or simply to show images in a non-competitive setting.
This evening was a lot of fun! Our webmaster, Pete Walker, brought along a collection of images from a project he worked on a few years ago called “The Light of the Night.” His images, inspired by how streetlights and other artificial lighting transform night scenes, can be viewed on his website [here].
Newer member Denise Tonge shared a wonderful selection of images from her holiday in Andalusia. Here are two contrasting images from Seville Cathedral:
A beautiful courtyard.

Denise also demonstrated a sharp eye for street photography with her images from the Rob Burrow Marathon.
I particularly love how the whole group in the photo is focused on an unseen action, except for one determined woman intent on crossing the road.
Kirsty Macleod showcased the club’s talent depth with a stunning landscape taken on the Scottish Borders
and a striking portrait of a fox.
Her images were a real highlight!
We also spent a couple of evenings reviewing accepted entries from the Yorkshire Photographic Union Annual Exhibition. Congratulations to Pete Walker, who earned a certificate for his image “Not Wednesday Addams.”
Additionally, our member Larry Walker received a couple of acceptances in the Vale of Evesham Salon, though I don’t have copies of those images as of this writing.
The biggest event of this month was our annual Butchers Arms Competition. This is the only internally judged competition of the season, making it a safe and fun space for beginners. The competition themes were in line with the upcoming interclub competitions, but we won’t reveal too much about our strategy for the 2024 interclub season—just yet!
The images submitted were from a range of categories, such as Travel, Multiple Exposure, Industry, and Creative. We’ll display a small gallery of the submissions below.
Looking ahead, we’ve got some exciting events lined up! Our webmaster Pete Walker will give a talk about the images that inspired him to return to photography. This Thursday, we’ll have a practical night shoot where members will meet up in historic Saltaire to take night photos, socialize, and help newcomers with any questions about night photography.
Finally, on October 31st, we’ll host an in-person talk by a passionate wildlife photographer from Doncaster Royston Packer. Judging by his website, it’s sure to be an event not to miss!
